Car & Truck Repairs The Basics
Don’t be fooled by marketing initiatives that say: “Buy this car, it’s maintenance free!”. It’s true that automobiles of this generation don’t require much upkeep as it did decades ago. It’s also true that cars are machines that need minor repairs once in a while. The best an owner can hope for is low maintenance which, by all means, doesn’t equate to neglect.
Low maintenance exists for newer models, but zero maintenance will only accelerate the automobile’s aging process. Waiting until something breaks instead of regularly checking the vehicle, will lead to piled up expenses for repairs in the end. Learning how to recognize a potential disaster saves time, money, and of course, your car from fast depreciation of value.
Some car manufacturers suggest replacement of PCV valves, engine coolant, and air filters after 50,000 miles of usage. This figure is more appropriate for a high-mileage driver, or a person who travels long distances in short amounts of time. Then again, do check your owner’s manual because this may vary from model to model. Professional mechanics advise to use these schedule recommendations as a basis for doing your regular maintenance checks but going a bit more often is required, even for new vehicles.
Factory recommendation is for an oil change after intervals of 7,500 - 10,000 miles. Filter changes should be done every other oil drain. The protective additives in motor oil become depleted after 3,000 - 4,000 miles of driving, wear quickly happens after such. There are benefits in regularly inspecting your vehicles.
When maintain a car, you also protect your investment. You are guaranteed that you have a reliable vehicle that runs smoothly. When the car is in top shape, you can save money. Small problems can be addressed before they cause more damage. In the long run, a car that is well - maintained will be worth more. When an owner decides to sell or trade, he or she can get the best value for it.
